Nostalgia Matching: Why Singles Are Reconnecting with Old Matches in 2025
Discover the rising dating trend of 2025—Nostalgia Matching. Learn why Gen Z and millennials are revisiting their past connections and how this trend is reshaping modern romance.

Have you ever felt the sudden urge to text an ex or revisit an old connection on a dating app? You’re not alone. In 2025, a growing number of singles are embracing a new dating trend called "Nostalgia Matching"—and it's taking the digital dating world by storm.
What is Nostalgia Matching?
Nostalgia Matching refers to the act of reconnecting with a previous match or ex on a dating app, driven by the comfort of familiarity and shared history. Unlike a late-night text filled with regret, this trend is rooted in emotional reflection and curiosity about what could have been.
According to a recent survey conducted by the popular dating app QuackQuack, 2 in 7 Indian users admitted to revisiting old matches, indicating that dating is becoming more circular rather than linear.
The survey was conducted in late April 2025 and included 8,546 active daters across metro cities, small towns, and rural regions. Participants, aged between 18 and 30, came from diverse professional backgrounds such as IT, education, healthcare, content creation, finance, and more. The gender representation was equally distributed to capture balanced insights.
Why Are Singles Embracing This Trend?
Ravi Mittal, CEO of QuackQuack, explained, “People naturally crave emotional safety and familiarity. Reconnecting with someone from the past offers both, even if things didn’t work out earlier. Dating today is less about finding someone new and more about re-exploring someone who almost felt right.”

The Unfinished Chapter
Many singles shared that their old matches never really ended—they just faded out due to timing, busy schedules, or lack of initiative. In fact, 27% of daters from Tier 1, 2, and 3 cities admitted they reconnected because the previous connection felt like ‘unfinished business.’
As Manish, a 26-year-old content strategist from Haryana, shared, “When I saw her profile again, I was hit with a wave of emotions and memories. It felt like the universe gave me a second chance.”
-
Goodbye Small Talk
One major perk of Nostalgia Matching is skipping the awkward small talk. Around 60% of women aged 25 to 30 reported that re-matching with an ex allowed them to have deeper and more meaningful conversations from the get-go. Chat durations were nearly twice as long as those with new matches. -
Gen Z’s Take on Romantic Recycling
Gen Z daters, especially those under 25, are far more open to revisiting old romances than their older counterparts. While younger singles believe in second chances and evolving relationships, many over 27 prefer a clean slate. However, the stigma around ‘romantic do-overs’ is slowly fading.
As 28-year-old Piyush put it, “I’m open to giving past connections another shot, but as we grow older, we become more cautious. There’s less room for mistakes.”

Right Timing Makes All the Difference
Sometimes, love is just about timing. Over 17% of Gen Z daters from metro cities believe that reconnecting with someone at the right moment can make all the difference.
“I matched with someone again after a long time, and it just felt right,” said Puja Trivedi, 24. “We’ve both grown, and this time, we’re ready.”
Final Thoughts
Nostalgia Matching is more than just a trend—it reflects the evolving mindset of modern daters who value emotional connections and personal growth. Whether it’s a second chance at love or closure from the past, revisiting an old match might just be the next step forward in your dating journey.
